The Passaic River CAG

History of the CAG

The Passaic River Community Advisory Group was formed in 2007 and won the CAG won the 2015 U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Citizen’s Excellence in Community Service Award.

Core Values

The following values were developed by the Passaic River Community Advisory Group to represent the consensus ideals of the Passaic River community. These values are intended to guide federal agencies and other stakeholders in making sustainable decisions and taking responsible action regarding all aspects of the cleanup, restoration, and stewardship of the Passaic River.

CAG meetings are held every 2nd Thursday, bi-monthly, from 6-8pm & are open to the public. Meetings are currently held virtually via Zoom, but in the future, we hope to return to full or hybrid in-person meetings.

Carol Johnston, SC - 2002

Sister Carol was born and raised in Newark and attended St. Vincent’s Academy. She was Director of the Women and Family Program at St. Columba Neighbor Club, Newark. She was project and planning Director for Ironbound Community Corporation.

“She was so persistent,” says Ana Baptista, [former] director of ICC’s environmental planning and programs. “Carol helped me to see the beauty of this waterway.”

2008 EPA Citizen Excellence in Community Involvement Award Winner: Carol Johnston

Carol Johnston passed away on March 25, 2013, after a courageous fight with cancer.
